Cộng Cà Phê, Nhà Thờ

A branch of the Hanoi chain known for coconut coffee, in Hoàn Kiếm.

Why it matters

Cộng is a chain, and it is here because it is the easiest place to find drinks that the older cafés on this list do not serve. Its menu has coconut coffee, yogurt coffee and a salted-cream coffee next to ordinary phin coffee, which makes a branch a practical way to try several of them in one place.

The company says it opened its first shop in October 2007 and took its name from the first word of Cộng hoà Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam, the country’s official name. Its cafés are styled after the subsidy era of the 1970s and 1980s, the period before the Đổi Mới reforms.

Which branch

There are many Cộng cafés in Hanoi and beyond. We list this one because the chain’s own store list and OpenStreetMap agree on where it is. The original shop on Triệu Việt Vương is no longer on the chain’s list. We have not visited.

What to order

Coconut coffee is the drink the chain is best known for. The menu, which is the same across branches, also lists phin đen and phin nâu: black and milk coffee in Hanoi’s vocabulary.
