Cà Phê Lâm

Phin coffee in an old Hoàn Kiếm house with a long story about painters.

Why it matters

Tatler Asia reported in 2025 that Cà Phê Lâm started in the early 1950s as a street stall run by Nguyễn Văn Lâm, before moving into the house on Nguyễn Hữu Huân. The walls carry sketches and paintings that artists, including Bùi Xuân Phái, are said to have left in exchange for coffee. That story is told by the press and repeated widely; it is an anecdote rather than a documented history.

Finding it

60 Nguyễn Hữu Huân, on the same street as Cà Phê Giảng. We could not place it precisely enough for a map pin, so use the address. We have not been.

What to order

Tatler describes coffee dripped slowly through an old aluminium phin. No source we trust names a particular drink, so we do not.
