Upstairs on Ngô Đức Kế, one of the city's longer-running specialty bars.
Why it matters
The Workshop is a specialty coffee bar of the kind described in
specialty coffee in Vietnam: filter and
espresso, beans roasted by the café, Vietnamese arabica on the list. It has been at this address
since at least 2016, which makes it one of the longer-running specialty bars in the city.
Finding it
Upstairs at 27 Ngô Đức Kế, a short street off Nguyễn Huệ in District 1. The door is at street
level and the café is up a staircase. We have not been.
What to order
Filter coffee is the point: The Dot Magazine lists Chemex, V60, Kalita Wave and siphon, plus
cold brew and espresso. For phin coffee, Cheo Leo and the
pavement stalls are the other end of the same city.
A family café in an alley off Nguyễn Thiện Thuật, District 3, still making cà phê vợt, sock-filter coffee. Said to have opened in 1938, it is often called Saigon's oldest.
