A small arabica pocket in the centre
The smallest of Vietnam's named coffee origins, growing arabica lower than the species usually likes.
Khe Sanh, in Hướng Hóa district, grows arabica at an altitude that would be marginal anywhere else — the latitude and the cooler central-coast climate compensate. It is a small and sometimes precarious growing area: typhoons, price swings and competition from other crops have all pushed area up and down over the years.
An unlikely place for arabica
Khe Sanh sits in Hướng Hóa district, in the mountains along Quảng Trị’s western border with Laos, at only 400 to 700 metres.
That is low for arabica. It works because latitude and the central-coast climate compensate: the area is cooler and cloudier than the elevation alone would suggest, and the Trường Sơn range moderates temperatures in a way that the Central Highlands plateau does not.
The result is a small arabica pocket whose coffee is commonly described as light, citric and herbal.
A few thousand hectares, up and down
Quảng Trị’s coffee area is a few thousand hectares and it moves. Typhoons come ashore here more often than in any other Vietnamese coffee area. Prices swing. And coffee competes directly with other crops, including black pepper, cassava, banana and, increasingly, commercial forestry, which pay better in some years.
Farmers have pulled coffee out and put it back in more than once. It is not a growing origin.
The name
Khe Sanh is internationally known for a 1968 battle, and visitors sometimes arrive for the history and are surprised to find coffee farms.
Coffee in the area predates the war. French planting reached here in the colonial period, and coffee resumed afterwards.
Finding it
Outside Vietnam, you are very unlikely to. Volumes are too small and the domestic market absorbs what there is.
What this means for you
Rarely exported as a single origin. Worth trying in Vietnam if you find it, mostly because it is commonly described so differently from Central Highlands coffee.
